Mission
"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you." - Matthew 28:19
Our mission is the great commission: To spread the good news of Jesus and make disciples in order to build the Body of Christ.
Vision
“Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.” - Matthew 22:36-40

Our vision to accomplish this is to be a Greatest Commandment church. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, mind and soul (Matthew 22:36-40). And what that means to us is that we need to love God with our heart by engaging in meaningful worship; We need to love God with our mind through diligent study; And we need to love God with our soul by serving Him through serving our community. This is what it means to be in a relationship with God.

Our Pastor
Pastor Scott grew up in Southern California to divorced parents. His step father went on to become a minister but after Scott saw his step father not living the life Christ called him to, Scott stepped away from the church. Although still a believer he wasn’t a follower.
Scott went on to become a Police Officer and was married to his first wife who he had two wonderful children, Tristan and Kendyll with.
Eventually Scott would get divorced and met his wife Carole. Carole also had two wonderful children Brittany and Spencer.
The two begin their life together with 4 great kids but hadn’t yet come to Christ. During this time both were going through divorces and it was during this time both feeling called back to God started attending church.
Over the years their belief turned to following. Scott began attending bible studies and serving at the church.
It was in 2020 when Scott’s step brother passed away who wasn’t a follower that God called him to ministry. Scott began attending seminary while still working as a police officer.
Scott retired in 2024 and he and Carole moved to Tennessee which was their dream. During this time God truly was guiding both of them and Scott met Pastor Stephen “Red” Shumate. Scott was given an opportunity to preach at Faith Engaged Church, something Scott had been praying God would lead him to.
Scott began preaching full time at Faith Engaged Church in June of 2025.
Scott and Carole are so blessed to be living their dream but more importantly where they feel God has led them. Their four kids all live out of state and by Gods grace they all know Christ. They also welcomed their first grandchild.
Scott is passionate about leading people to Christ. To go make disciples as the Bible calls us to do. But most importantly Scott follows Gods first and second greatest commandments, love God above all else and love others as yourself.
It you’re reading this, that means you’ve shown an interest in Faith Engaged Church. What Scott found when he first attended was a small group of big believers. People passionate about Jesus. A church that reminded him of Acts and the small beginnings of the church. A group of people who come together in fellowship, caring for one another and being a family in Christ Jesus. His hope is that you too will see the beauty of this family of brothers and sisters in Jesus.
Planting Pastor
The big picture of Stephen’s journey can be found in Luke 15:11-32, The Story of the Prodigal Son. Stephen grew up in a Christian home where he and his family faithfully went to church every Sunday.
Stephen became a Christian at a young age and for the most part lived a Christian life. However, in his twenties, he began to live the life of the Prodigal son. And while his belief in God never wavered, he certainly wasn’t living a life pleasing to God.

One day in 2008, Stephen found himself in tears at the end of his bed praying to God. He realized he was desiring the “slop of the pigs” and so he came running back to God, who welcomed him with open arms. At this time, he clearly heard God whisper in his heart… “Are you done trying to do life your way? Are you ready to do it my way?” His answer was an emphatic “Yes!” That night, Stephen rededicated his life to Jesus and committed to follow him no matter what the cost.

Over the next 6 years, God began a mighty work in Stephen’s life that took him from living a life that was not pleasing to God to being a pastor at a small church in Nashville. Stephen continues to grow, learn and change as God works in his life.

In 2008 Stephen and his wife Sarah met on Eharmony and on January 4th, 2009, they had their first date at Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, TN. Both Stephen and Sarah came armed with the excuse of having choir practice later that night in case the date didn’t go well. Neither one found a reason to use their excuse. Two and a half years later, they were married and the rest is history. In 2018 Stephen and Sarah adopted their beautiful daughter Nikki.

Sarah once swore that she would never marry a pastor and Stephen once said he never wanted to be a pastor… Now they have learned, never say never… especially where God is concerned.
